Anti Ragging Policy

Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited within the premises of KCNIT College of Education.

Any instance of ragging would attract severe punishment of cancellation of admission, suspension, rustication or expulsion from the Institute /Hostel.

Apart from the institute level punishment, there will be strong police and legal action. Ragging is a cognizable offence under the law of the land, and the Supreme Court has ruled that the punishment to be meted out has to be exemplary and harsh to act as a deterrent. According to relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), those found guilty for a ragging related offence can be punished with imprisonment or fine or both. The quantum of punishment varies with the gravity of the crime. For example, Section 323, which deals with the cases of voluntarily causing hurt can lead to imprisonment up to one year or fine or both; Section 306, which deals with abetment to suicide, specifies the punishment to be imprisonment up to ten years with or without fine. Some other relevant sections of IPC in this context include Section 341 (wrongful restraint), Section 506 (criminal intimidation), Section 302 (murder), Section 307 (attempt to murder), etc.

What is ragging? Anything that may cause a fresher physical or mental discomfort due to an act of a senior. More specifically,

  • Physical abuse, for example, forcing to eat, drink or smoke, forcing to dress or undress.
  • Verbal abuse, for example swear words and phrases, direct or indirect derogatory references to the person’s appearance, attire, religion, caste, family or chosen field of study.
  • Forced activity, for example
    • Chores for seniors, e.g., copying notes, cleaning rooms, etc.
    • Attending extra-curricular events to cheer hostel teams.
    • Missing classes; not allowing to study.
    • Staying awake late or getting up at unreasonable times.
    • Singing or dancing or performing in any other way.
    • Using foul language or shouting or cheering loudly.
    • Misbehaving with strangers, particularly women.
    • Reading or browsing pornographic/objectionable material

 

 

Punishment for Culprits

KCNIT College of Education, Banda shall consider one or more of the following punishments for students involved in ragging

  1. Cancellation of admission
  2. Suspension from attending classes
  3. Withholding/withdrawing scholarship/fellowship and other benefits
  4. Debarring from appearing in any test/examination or other evaluation process
  5. Withholding results
  6. Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet, tournament, youth festival, etc.
  7. Suspension/expulsion from the hostel
  8. Rustication from the institution for period ranging from 1 to 4 semesters
  9. Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution
  10. Lodging of an FIR with the police
  11. Monetary penalty of up to Rs. 50,000/- (Rs. Fifty Thousand)
  12. Collective punishment: when the persons committing or abetting the crime of ragging are not identified, the institution shall resort to collective punishment as a deterrent to ensure community pressure on the potential raggers.
